Summer Schools in Asia

Since 2008, the Institute for South Asian and Southeast Asian Studies (SASOA) of Cologne University has been conducting yearly summer schools in "Indian Area Studies" and "Tamil Language and Culture" in collaboration with the cultural institute “Karuppan Agencies” in Korkkadu-village, Pondicherry, India. From 2017 onwards, SASOA will be extending the offer for summer schools to other parts of Asia the culture of which has been largely ifluenced by India:

1. Every March, the summer school "Tamil: Language and Culture" will be held in Korkkadu, Pondicherry, South India. This summer school starts on the first Monday of March and lasts four weeks. The content of this summer school is the acquisition of the Tamil language (beginners and intermediate level) in standart and colloquial language. Insights into Tamil culture will be given through excursions to places of importance for Tamil literary development, including Chennai, as well as through everyday life in the village Korkkadu (Union Territory Pondicherry). Accommodation will be offered in an extended house of a 3-generations Tamil family, that also organizes "Karuppan Agencies". Classes: Mo-Fr 9:30-11:00 a.m., 11:15-12:45 a.m., 1:00-1:45 p.m. (5 teaching-hours daily). In addition, there will be self-studies and project-work.

2. Every September, the summer school "Indian History and Culture" will be held in Korkkadu, Pondicherry, South India. This summer school starts on the first Monday of September and lasts four weeks. The contents of this summer school are history, religions, society, political and economic aspects of pre-modern and modern India. Accommodation will be offered in an extended house of a 3-generations Tamil family, that also organizes "Karuppan Agencies". Classes during the first three weeks: Mo-Fr 9:30-11:00 a.m., 11:15-12:45 a.m., 1:00-1:45 p.m. (5 teaching-hours daily). In addition, there will be self-studies and project-work. During the fourth week, there will be a 6-7 days' excursion covering historical sites of Tamil Nadu and the Tea-growing regions of Munnar in Kerala. Additionally, a crash-course in Tamil language can be offered.

3. Every March or August, the summer school “Cambodian History and Culture" will be held in Siem Reap und Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This summer school comprises the last three weeks of the month (classes also during the week-ends). The contents of this summer school are history, religions, society, political and economic aspects of pre-modern and modern Cambodia with special focus on Angkor as well as on the turbulent decades of the 20th Century. Several excursions will illustrate Cambodia’s pre-Angkor and Angkor period as well as ecological and economic aspects of the great inland lake Tonle Sap. Classes will be conducted in situ through talks and lectures. Additionally, a crash-course in Khmer language can be offered.

4. Every March or August, the summer school “Bali History and Culture" will be held in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. This summer school comprises the last three weeks of the month (classes also during the week-ends). The contents of this summer school are history, religions, society, political and economic of Indonesia with special focus on Bali and its special culture: Bali is Indonesia’s only Island where Hinduism is prominent. Several excursions will illustrate ecological and economic aspects of Bali’s special form of rice cultivation as well as of the island’s volcanic geography. Classes will be conducted in situ through talks and lectures. Additionally, a crash-course in Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) can be offered.

 

 

Costs

The fee for every Summer School ist 850 €. It covers accomodation, food, excursions (incl. hotels) entrance fees, classes and teaching materials. Only flight and visa have to be paid by the students themselves (Germany-India-Germany: about 600 €, Germany-Cambodia-Germany and Germany-Bali-Germany: about 900 €). For all directions, tourist visa on arrival are available. However, for India we suggest to get a tourist visa (no other type of visa!) in advance.
